Overview
The Port of Dover is one of the world’s busiest passenger ports carrying in excess of 15 million passengers, 3/4 million HGVs and 120,000 buses & coaches annually. The port has been owned and operated by the Dover Harbour Board, a statutory corporation, since it was formed by Royal Charter in 1606 by King James I.
Berths 5 and 6 are in the Eastern Dock and are utilised for the busy Cross Channel Ferry service. These works were undertaken around the clock to fit in with the sailing schedule of these large vessels. This was logistically the largest contract we had undertaken, since the founding of the company, so required an enhanced element of health and safety and operational control.
Tactile surveys were carried out by divers to ascertain the proposed anode sled installation points. This highlighted the requirement for dynamic plough dredging of the dock bed prior to installation. 9 individual anode sleds were fabricated in Birmingham and mobilised to site via road transport. They were installed in their pre-allocated positions by divers, in conjunction with a crane barge, and other marine plant.
Cathode protection anode sleds and their associated cabling and junction boxes were installed, and secured in the berth pocket, utilising 60 x 6m deep ground anchors.
